NATURE OF WORK:
The purpose of this classification is to provide security and supervision of inmates in the County jail, and inmates who are sentenced to the work release program correctional facility.
SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES INCLUDE:
Processes new inmates and arrested persons; books new inmates; searches inmates and seizes all personal property; inventories personnel possessions including clothes and money; issues inmate uniforms; prepares inmate identification cards; enters arrests into computer; secures inmates in jail or holding cells; fingerprints inmates; informs inmates of charges and bond amounts; processes of inmates into the work release program; verifies inmate employment, transportation, job changes, and other related information; maintains daily timesheets and job location logs; investigates discrepancies regarding inmates work hours; collects payments from and issues receipts to inmates; collects money for inmate accounts; prepares and processes paperwork for new inmates; accepts and answers inmate request forms; prepares bonds, incident, and disciplinary reports and other required reports; reviews of incarceration documents; maintains logs and files of inmates; answers direct questions from inmates; conducts daily operations of the jail including meal times, church services, GED classes, AA meetings, routes maintenance crews, monitors suicide watches, etc.; assigns and supervises inmates to clean up detail; disburses cleans and sanitation supplies; screens inmates for medical conditions; escorts and supervises inmates during on-site court appearances; maintains order and security within the facility; oversees visitation. Performs other related duties as required. Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 160 pounds). Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Tasks may require exposure to temperature/weather extremes, strong odors/fumes, toxic/poisonous agents, smoke, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, animal/wildlife, disease/blood/bodily fluids/pathogenic substances, explosives, violence, bright/dim light, noise, vibrations, machinery, traffic hazards.
Selection will be made from a register of eligible applicants that may be established by education, work experience, test score, personal interview, credit check, criminal history, driving history (copy of driverís license may be required), drug screen, and/or physical examination.
MUST MEET MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- May be required to possess or acquire a valid Basic Jail Officer Certification.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Working hours will be 12 hour shifts.
AUTOMATIC APPLICATION DISQUALIFIERS:
- Any conviction of a felony criminal act.
- Any conviction of impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer.
- Any conviction of fleeing or attempting to elude Police.
- Any conviction involving bringing contraband across a guard line.
Note: Conviction refers to the disposition being entered by a plea or verdict of guilty or a plea of nolo contendere.
- Any Marijuana use within the last year.
- Any use of other illegal drugs within the past three (3) years.
- Any sale, distribution, manufacturing or transportation of any illegal drug.
- No tattoos on the neck or face.
- One (1) tattoo of 4 inches x 4 inches, visible in short sleeves is allowed. If the tattoo is larger or there are multiple tattoos, you will be required to wear long sleeves, regardless of the position held.
You will be required to pass a Civil Service Exam and complete a Physical Agility Evaluation. The Physical Agility consists of: The Step Run (run up 72 steps and back down), 1/4 mile run, 10 push-ups, drag a weighted object approximately 20 yards, all within 5 minutes.
